external image 00225r.jpg This picture was taken in Waco, Texas, November 1939. This picture was taken by Russell Lee. This picture was called "The Gem Theatre Exclusive Colored Theatre." This photo was taken outdoors, in an urban area, in the daytime, and it seems like the photo has semi-good lighting. There are no people in this picture. The first thing that catches my eye first in this picture is the sign for the theatre. In the photo there is movie theatre with good conditions, spacing, and i cannot see what surrounds the building. The tone of the picture is heavy, negative, and dark. The picture is this kind of tone because the theatre is only for colored people, which discriminates them. It is heavy because the sign is there saying that it is only for colored people and since it is on a movie theatre, then many people would see it. It is dark because there is not so good lighting in the photo. Two questions that I would ask the photographer would be: Why did you take this picture? and Did you ever go into this theatre?

external image 00209r.jpg This picture was taken in Rome, Georgia, May 1943. The person who took this photo was Esther Bubley. This picture was called "A sign at the Greyhound bus station." This photo was taken outdoors in an urban area and in the daytime. The lighting for this picture was good. There are no people in this photo. The thing that catches my eye first in this picture is the Colored sign for the bus station. There is only the top of a building in this photo, I do not know what kind of building it was. The tone of the picture is heavy, negative, light. The picture is this tone because many people can see the sign since it is near a bus station, it discriminates colored people, and the picture has good lighting. Two questions that I would ask the photographer would be: Why did you take a picture of this sign? and What was your reason for doing so?

external image 00220r.jpg This picture was taken in Lancaster, Ohio, in August 1938. The person who took this photo was Ben Shahn. This picture was called "We Cater to White Trade only." This photo was taken outdoors in an urban area in the daytime. The lighting of this picture seems poor. There are no people in this photo. The thing that catches my eye in this picture is the sign and the blinds behind them. This building is a business, restaurant. The restaurant seems to be in good condition and I cannot tell the spacing of the building. I also cannot see the surroundings of the building either. The tone of this photo is light, negative, and dark. The picture is this tone because it is a little hard to see, it discriminates everyone except for white people, and the picture has poor lighting. Two questions that I would ask the photographer would be: Why did you take this picture of this sign? and Is this restaurant important to you or anyone you know?
